Hal-Con in the Community

Hal-Con is committed to serving the community while getting the word out about our annual convention. We participate in dozens of events throughout the year to show we’re a vital influence for nerds and geeks in the city of Halifax. We are dedicated to providing a fun and welcoming environment for all our friends and annual attendees to get their geek on.

In 2011, we participated in four community parades and won several awards for our entries! Our troop is composed of several smaller teams who all support Hal-Con; the Canadian Heavy Armour, Anime @ Large, Nova Scotia Furries, and KAG Kanada Halifax.

We have to thank Steele Ford! Without them – we couldn’t be the parade successes that we are!

2011 Parades:

  • Eastern Passage Summer Festival Parade (Award: Best Car Entry)
  • Natal Day Parade
  • HRM Pride Parade
  • Cole Harbour Harvest Festival
  • Halifax Official Zombie Walk
  • Chronicle Herald Parade of Lights (Award: Honourable Mention for Walking Group category)
  • Spryfield Annual Christmas Parade (Award: Most Original Entry)

2010 Parades:

  • Eastern Passage Summer Festival Parade
  • Spryfield Annual Christmas Parade (Award: Most Original Entry)
  • Waverly Gold Rush Parade
  • Natal Day Parade

We hosted several fundraiser BBQs throughout the summer season with groups like the Halifax Zombie Walk, or at sponsor location Quantum Frontier Games & Comics (proudly supporting Free Comic Book Day) as well as Giant Robot Comics.

Hal-Con has paired up with Alpha Strike Laser Tag to host “All You Can Play” nights – perhaps one of our most fun events! We host these shoot-em-up nights monthly throughout the year. We’re also working with Carbon Arc, independent cinema at the Khyber on Barrington St., this fall to bring back our ‘fan favourites’ film nights. Plus, we host a trivia game night at the Boston Pizza on Granville St. called “Fan Boy Feud”.

In 2009 and 2010, with Empire Theatres as a partner, Hal-Con provided prizes to audiences across the Maritimes as new sci-fi & fantasy films made their debut on the big screens. Our costumed friends have joined us at many of these events and really become a regular crowd pleaser!

Additionally, we pair up with several other community groups to partner and support more events. This includes the annual RBC Multicultural Festival, Yelp! Eats, Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake, Can’t Stop the Signal/Equality NOW!, Gelatinous Dudes’ Annual 24-HR Charity Board Game, AIDS Walk for Life and Play in a Day.

Hal-Con has donated prizes and support to;

  • CKDU Annual Funding Drive (university radio at Dalhousie Uni.)
  • Support Japan fundraiser by Toxic Blossom
  • Geeks vs. Nerds
  • Jules Verne Steampunk Association
  • Maritime Heavy Armour
  • Animaritimes annual anime convention
