2nd ANNUAL FANTASY ART EXHIBITION SERIES: CELEBRATING ART AND COMMUNITY

Hal-Con Sci-Fi Fantasy Association, in partnership with the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, invites artists to participate in the 2nd Annual Fantasy Art Showcase, celebrating Art and Community; an Exhibition of Original Works of Art. We recognize the support of the Province of Nova Scotia. We are pleased to work in partnership with the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage to develop and promote our cultural resources for all Nova Scotians.

Important Dates for 2019

June 1st: Launch of 2019 Program

June 1st to August 31st: Open submission period for Artists

September 1st to 14th: Jury review period

Mid-September to Mid-November: exhibit on display at various locations

Exhibition Locations

This year, we’re expanding beyond Halifax Regional Municipality to include more locations and working to bring the show across the Province. These dates/locations will mean more than 30,000 people could see your artwork.

  • Nocturne (at the Halifax Central Library) October 19
  • Hal-Con (at the Halifax Convention Centre) October 25-27
  • The Dart Gallery Nov 7-17th

2019 Entry Information

We wish to encourage everyone in Nova Scotia to apply to be part of this exhibition series. To be eligible, the work you are submitting must be fully original and completed by you, the artist. You must be living in Nova Scotia for at least one year. Students of all ages are encouraged to participate, as well as artists of all skill levels.

All forms of media are welcome, provided they do not exceed the dimensions of 20×20 inches and 1-inch depth. All pieces must be hanging ready. Prints of originals, original works on paper, and digital prints are welcome but must be hanging ready. On the back or the side of your entry, please make sure you include your name/phone/email to make sure.

Please include your name, your preferred name recognition for the display card (which we will generate), and provide a title for your work.

Colouring pages are not acceptable unless you drew the original art within.

Important note: the artwork does not need to be “nerdy or geeky” in any sense at all. Please submit any work that suits the guidelines and themes that you wish.

In Summary:

  • Dimensions of 20×20 inches maximum
  • Must be hanging ready (such as on canvas with some depth for a nail to hang, or framed)
  • Any medium welcome, including digital
  • Include your contact info (name/phone/email) on the back of your submission
  • The work should have been created in 2018 or 2019
  • Complete the online entry form or print a copy to bring with your submission

Prizes

There are three categories, each with 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes. A total of $3,500 will be awarded.

  • $700 for 1st place
  • $200 for 2nd place
  • $100 for 3rd place

A fan-favourite prize will be awarded based on votes received at Hal-Con.

Permissions & Rules

All artwork submitted for consideration will remain the property of the artist. You agree to lend us the artwork while in consideration and on display. The artwork will be returned to you after all display events are concluded. The cost of returning the art will be at your expense (ex. by mail) unless you can arrange to retrieve the work in person from the Halifax-Dartmouth area. We will do our best to

If you do not contact us to retrieve your artwork within before March 31, 2020 (more than 3 months after art show exhibition is completed), you will forfeit your piece and we will find a good home for it.

Your work must be original, made by the submitting artist, created in the year 2018 or 2019.

The subject of the artwork submitted can be on any topic, but we encourage you to use the themes listed above to inspire you.

The work submitted cannot contain nudity, depictions of graphic violence, or any other scenes that might cause concern for families or young audiences. The display locations cannot host any art in the exhibition that may upset or offend youth.

If you want to arrange drop-off for your work, please contact artshow@hal-con.com at least one week prior to the art deadline. Additional drop-off locations may be added.

Disclaimers:

We cannot guarantee the safety of the artwork against theft or damage but will take all reasonable measures to prevent this. You are strongly encouraged to seek insurance if you wish to be fully covered.

We use Stanhope-Simpson representative Shawn Freeze. If you need assistance regarding an exhibition floater, please contact him at sfreeze@stanhopesimpson.com for any questions regarding insurance.

We may affix a small label (using painter’s tape or other low/no-residue adhesive) to number your entry for internal labeling.
