Kate Phillips is a comic artist and illustrator based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nova Scotia. Originally from Baddeck, Kate received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in 2013, and since then has been involved in comic projects, artistic residencies and gallery shows across the country and internationally.
Expressive characters and inky linework are only a few of the tools that Kate Phillips uses to tell tales that suspend our disbelief. In her own comics, ordinary tasks become adventures, comfortable places become strange, and familiar faces discuss unfamiliar stories. Drawing inspiration from lived experience, Kate pushes everyday life into silly (and sincere) territory.
Kate’s small press comic work includes The Usual, High Tide, A Brush with Debt, and Spray Days, and she’s also storyboarded, lettered, and coloured for a number of other projects. Kate has also illustrated children’s books including Deal With It: Biphobia, A Mother’s Day Surprise, Norm the Bull Goes Missing, and the upcoming Gaelic children’s book, An Stàball.
