The Great Hal-Con Geek Quest
Hal-Con Sci-Fi and Fantasy Association has a mission for you: The Great Hal-Con Geek Quest! The event, which raised funds for the IWK Health Center Foundation and Kids Help Phone, took teams all over downtown Halifax where they participated in a series of quests that tested their knowledge of Hal-Con, Halifax, and in some cases even their senses of humour!
Teams competed with each other to score the most points in a limited period of time. All quests required photo and video evidence to document their completion, with many of them being shared to social media. Teams were encouraged to use their wits to come up with the best image—creativity and ingenuity earned extra points!
The last Geek Quest was held in 2018.
Rules of the Geek Quest:
- The Great Hal-Con Geek Quest must have been completed without the use of a vehicle.
- Quests could be completed in any order.
- All photos or videos must have included all team members, with exception of one.
- The sign provided must have been included in all photos and videos.
- All individuals must have signed a waiver (The Great Hal-Con Geek Quest Waiver) in order to be able to compete.
Each completed quest was worth five points. Bonus points were awarded on a case by case basis. If a quest was identified as having the possibility of bonuses, the maximum available was five points. The judge’s word was final. Creativity and ingenuity go a long way! The team who had the highest score won first place, second highest second, and so-forth. In the case of a tie there was be a “selfie off” and the winners would be determined by the judges.
The Team Spirit Award was be determined by the judges based on team uniform/costuming, team spirit, participation, creativity, ingenuity and being a general good sport.
Prizes donated by the event sponsors were awarded to the top two scoring groups, and as well as to the team displaying the best team spirit. In addition to the sponsor prizes all registered teams were entered into a draw for a chance to win two weekend passes to Hal-Con and a pair of Warp Speed passes.
